Melissa Doyle opens up about Covid heartbreak: ‘Pretty tough’

TV personality Melissa Doyle has opened up about how ‘tough’ it has been watching her youngest child go through her schooling experience during NSW’s Covid lockdown.

Talia, 17, is one of many Australian students who are in their final years of high school and are unable to participate in the usual rites of passage.

“I’m sad for the things they’re not able to do and are missing out on,” Melissa told Daily Telegraph.

“Watching Talia go through year 12 is pretty tough.”

The former Sunrise host also added that her 20-year-old son Nicholas, who recently came home from university in America, has also been affected by lockdown.

“Nick’s come home for his holidays and hasn’t been able to catch up with any of his friends or do anything,” she added.

The 51-year-old went on to detail how her latest project, a one-hour Foxtel special titled Walking with Hope, has made her inspired by the strength of the country’s youth.

The documentary features Melissa joined by a group of young women on a bushwalk while discussing topics including online bullying, sexual abuse, suicide and anorexia.

“I’ve learned how incredibly adaptable they are and how strong they are,” she remarked.

“Think of all the things they’re going through, all the challenges, all the losses – all the lasts that they won’t get, the firsts that have been delayed. They are remarkable.”

Melissa’s admission comes shortly after it was announced last month that she had signed with Channel Nine, one year after leaving Channel Seven due to Covid budget cuts.

The journalist is set to present and narrate Nine’s upcoming docuseries Australia Behind Bars, which will air “in the next few months” according to The Australian.

Melissa had a 25-year career at Channel Seven, working on Seven News, Sunday Night and most notably Sunrise from 2002 to 2013.

Upon her exit, she said in a statement at the time, “I have some personal news to share. After 25 years I am leaving the Seven Network. Whilst I am sad to be leaving, I do so with a great deal of pride, satisfaction and gratitude.

“Every ending is a beginning and I’m excited for what comes next.”
