Melbourne residents mock ‘cringe’ detail in pub's advert - can you spot it?

An ad in Melbourne has fired up an age-old debate but can you spot what everyone’s grievance is?

The ad produced by Bundaberg Rum calls for people to get behind their local watering hole after almost two years of lockdowns.

A Reddit user snapped a photo of the ad and shared it online.

“Don’t forget the parmies,” it reads.

The advertisement is of course referring to an Australian pub staple: the chicken parmigiana.

Chicken parmi or chicken parma?

However, viewers on Reddit, many of whom appear to be from Victoria, have an issue with the use of the word “parmie” as an abbreviation.

“I cringed the first time I saw this,” one user wrote.

Many suggested in Victoria it should be called a “parma” and not a “parmie”.

One user who claims to have lived in Melbourne for seven years said they have always called it a “parma” and another photoshopped the ad so it had “parma” instead of “parmie” written on it.

“Vic here so always called them parmas,” another wrote.

One user jokingly suggested the ad should be torn down.

“Just for this, I'm boycotting my local,” another wrote.

Other Australian words based on states

  • Cossies – Another name for togs, swimmers or bathers for people in NSW.

  • Choc-bomb – The chocolate coated ice cream often bought at cinemas in WA. They are also called choc tops in other states.

  • Primas – The small juice box with a straw is called this in Victoria.

Victorians call it a parma

Regardless, it might be an argument which is never settled.

A survey conducted by market research company YouGov in 2020 found a majority of Victorians refer to it as a parma, with 72 per cent of participants calling it that. The other two options in the survey were parmi and parmy.

NSW was found to be the most evenly split between the three while South Australia had the lowest percentage of people calling their parmigiana a parma with just nine per cent.

Other states also had overwhelming support for either parmi or parmy over parma.

It seems mostly Victorians refer to the dish as a parma at least according to the YouGov research and another survey conducted by Arnott’s in 2020 as it prepared to release a new flavour of Shapes.

What Victorians call it shouldn’t be a surprise. In 2018, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews weighed in on the pressing issue and declared it’s a parma.

Interestingly, Arnott’s also found 50 per cent of people in the Northern Territory don’t abbreviate it at all. Half of the people served in the top end call it by its full name.

Anyway, what do you call it? Of course, you could also just… Order something else and avoid this debate entirely.

Oh, and next week on Yahoo News. I’ll be delving into potato scallops. What do you call them?
