A Melbourne pub has been surrounded by heavily armed police after it is believed two men stormed the venue to rob it on Monday morning.

Victoria Police said in a statement they were called to Westmeadows in Melbourne’s north after reports of a burglary about 5am.

Police said the offenders are possibly armed and have surrounded the Westmeadows Tavern where the men remain inside.

“Investigators have been told that two offenders entered the Ardlie Street premises, possibly armed with firearms,” police said in a statement.

“The area has been cordoned off, there is no one else in the building and we ask that members of the public avoid the area.”

Local resident Bruce Allan told the Herald Sun the siege was “pretty scary”.

“My son used to work there up until a few months back. It was robbed twice while he was up there,” he said.

“It happened probably four of five times over the past few years. It’s usually the bottle shop but I don’t know what it is this time.

“It’s normally very quiet down here, that’s why everyone likes it. It’s like a village, a bit of a hidden little pocket.”

More to come.
