Melbourne man on 1.5km copper theft charge

A man has been charged with stealing enough copper cabling from suburban rail stations to stretch the length of Melbourne's Domain Tunnel.

The 1.5 kilometres of cabling was stolen and damaged near railway stations at Sunshine, Ginifer and St Albans in June and July.

Police charged the St Albans man with four counts of theft, three counts of criminal damage and commit indictable offence whilst on bail.

He was bailed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court on August 18.
