Melbourne factory fire prompts evacuations

A fire at a fruit packing business in Melbourne's east has forced the evacuation of about 200 people.

The blaze engulfed the Wantirna South facility about 3pm on Tuesday and firefighters were still trying to bring it under control hours later.

Thick black smoke from the High Street factory prompted emergency services to issue an advice message for Glen Waverley and Wantirna South.

The Environmental Protection Authority warned the public to avoid the area until further notice.

Part of the factory roof has been been brought down by flames.

About 12 Country Fire Authority crews and firefighters from Fire Rescue Victoria are on the scene and surrounding roads have been shut.
