Mel B has shared a moving photo showing her visiting her dad’s grave to tell him about getting an MBE.

The Spice Girl, 46, was recognised in the New Year Honours list for services to charitable causes and vulnerable women.

The picture posted on Instagram shows Mel leaning over the headstone of her late father Martin Brown, who died in March 2017 following a battle with myeloma cancer.

“This was the moment I told my dad about my MBE,” she wrote.

“On his death bed I promised him I would leave my abusive marriage. He gave me that strength. He would be so proud."

“I’m overwhelmed, honoured and grateful and as patron of @womens_aid," she went on.

"I will NEVER stop this fight to #stopabuse #itsnotyourfault #silencenomore #womensupportwomen #speakup #youarenotalone #reclaimthesestreets #yourlifematters #togetherwearestronger."

The singer separated from husband Stephen Belafonte in 2016 after nine years of marriage and has accused him of physical and mental abuse during their relationship.

Mel won praise last year after starring in a harrowing short film to raise awareness of domestic violence.

The four-minute film – entitled Love Should Not Hurt – was made for the charity Women’s Aid in collaboration with composer and director Fabio D’Andrea.

It showed the singer as a woman trapped in a relationship which looked great on the outside but wasn't what it appeared to be.

Belafonte has previously denied Mel’s claims about him, with his legal team saying the allegations were "outrageous and unfounded".
