California residents Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have urged people to open their homes to people whose own properties have been devastated by the fires that have ravaged parts of Los Angeles.

In a statement on their sussex.com website, the couple said the wildfires “have raged through neighborhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centers, and so much more—affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life.”

They offered resources and ideas for those who wanted to help, linking to organizations including “José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen, which has been a longtime partner of the Archewell Foundation” and is “serving meals to both first responders and victims of the fire.”

The also paid tribute to “firefighters who risk their lives, bravely showing up in these high-risk environments to help save homes, families, and communities in need.”

Meghan recently spoke of her anguish at the death of her pet dog and the couple’s website also flagged the work of the Animal Wellness Foundation, which they said would “house and care for animals evacuated by the fires.”

The couple urged people to open their own homes to people in need, saying: “If a friend, loved one, or pet has to evacuate and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do. And be sure to check in with any disabled or elderly neighbors to see if they need help evacuating.”

Meghan is due to debut a feel good home show on Netflix next week.

The couple live in Montecito, a high fire risk area, but over an hour’s drive from the parts of L.A. currently burning.
