The four-hour event at Coles set to divide shoppers this weekend

If crowded shopping centres aren’t quite your thing, you’re probably going to want steer clear of Coles this Saturday.

But if collecting miniature versions of Tim Tams, dishwashing tablets and Nescafe Gold is – well, you’re in luck.

Amid scrutiny over their plastic bag ban backflip, the supermarket last month launched ‘The Little Shop’ promotion, with shoppers competing to collect 30 tiny versions of store favourites.

The promotion, which awards shoppers one mini item for every $30 spent, sparked scenes reminiscent of the Pokémon cards fad, with ambitious collectors trying to sell complete sets on eBay for $1000.

Thousands of people, who have already joined Facebook groups to try and trade the mini items, will now have the option of heading down to 37 supermarkets across the country this Saturday to take part in the four-hour swap session

The Little Shop promotion had been criticised after the distribution of the miniature plastic items followed the national ban of single-use plastic bags.

Some customers slammed Coles for its continued use of plastic in the wake of the bag ban.

A Coles spokesman told Yahoo7 the Little Shop promotion had proved popular with shoppers.

“We know there are swap groups forming all over the country from Port Augusta in South Australia to Mackay in Queensland all the way to Ellenbrook in Western Australia. In addition, we are holding an official Swap Day in 37 supermarkets across the country on Saturday 11 August.”
