'I may not make it in': Man discovers Lotto win on his way to work

A Queensland man had the ultimate excuse not to go to work on Monday after he won $2.2 million in Saturday’s Lotto.

The man, from Meridan Plains on the Sunshine Coast, was on his way to work when he discovered he was a multi-millionaire.

He told a Golden Casket official the prize was “magnificent”.

“I woke up this morning and thought ‘life is going to change today’ and holy hell – what a day! I’ve just checked my Gold Lotto ticket on the way to work – I may not make it in now,” he said.

The lucky winner has also shared his secret to picking his Lotto numbers.

“They’re all one number higher than our birthdays. I always used to miss out by one number so a year and a half ago I decided to change my numbers. I’m glad I did,” he said.

He plans to use his winnings to look after his kids and retire early.

The winning ticket was purchased from Parklands News in Meridan Plains and owner Chris Farley said it was the first winner sold since taking over the business last year.

“We’ve finally got the monkey off our back. Everyone’s been asking when we were going to sell our first division one,” he said.

“We’ve sold a few division two entries, but it’s great to have a division one.”

The Lott said nine people shared in Saturday’s $20 million Lotto draw, with three from both Victoria and NSW and one each from Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia.

Hunter Valley friends share $2.2 million

A pair of retired friends from the Hunter Valley will also share a $2.2 million prize.

“I don’t always buy a ticket but because the draw had $20 million up for grabs we thought we should,” one of the friends told a NSW Lotteries official.

“I checked the ticket yesterday and I first saw five numbers in a row and thought ‘oh that’s good’. But then I saw all six numbers were there.

“I nearly fainted. Nothing like this has ever happened to me before.”

The friends are yet to decide how they will spend their winnings.

If you bought a ticket not all hope is lost. There is still somebody out there who may not realise they’re a multi-millionaire.

A person in Albury in southern NSW is yet to claim their prize after purchasing their ticket from NewsXpress Lavington Square Cards and Gift.

“If you discover you are holding the division one winning ticket, contact NSW Lotteries on 131 868 to begin the process of claiming your prize,” a NSW Lotteries spokesman said.
