'Scary news': NRL star Matt Scott hospitalised after suffering stroke
North Queensland Cowboys star Matt Scott is in hospital after suffering a mild stroke.
The retiring front rower remains in hospital in Brisbane after being admitted on Sunday, and is expected to make a full recovery.
Scott stayed in Brisbane after reportedly feeling sick following the first leg of the team's trip home after Saturday's heavy defeat to Newcastle.
According to the club, doctors are confident the stroke is unrelated to football.
“The Cowboys will continue to provide Matt and his family all possible support and the club would ask media to respect the privacy of the Scott family during this time,” the club said in a statement.
It is another blow in a tough year for coach Paul Green's team, who sit 15th with just seven wins this season.
Scott's setback follows a brain bleed to young talent Te Maire Martin and ruptured spleen to centre Justin O'Neill earlier this season.
Scott to hang up the boots
The premiership-winning prop will retire at the end of the 2019 season.
The 33-year-old debuted as an 18-year-old in 2004 and has gone on to make 263 appearances for the Cowboys across 16 seasons.
He sits third on the all-time appearances list for the club behind Johnathan Thurston (294) and Matthew Bowen (270).
