Matt Nagy will not coach Bears in Week 8 due to COVID-19 protocols
Matt Nagy won't coach the Chicago Bears in Week 8, but it's only temporary. Nagy is unable to coach the team during its game against the San Francisco 49ers due to COVID-19 protocols, the team announced Saturday.
Nagy tested positive for the virus Monday, and has been away from the team all week while he quarantines. Nagy, who is fully vaccinated, did not reveal much about his status during the week. In order for Nagy to coach Sunday, he would have needed two negative COVID-19 tests. The Bears likely made the announcement after receiving the results from Nagy's COVID-19 test Saturday.
Special teams coordinator Chris Tabor will take over as head coach with Nagy out.
Bears dealing with COVID-19 outbreak
Nagy is among a handful of Bears players to test positive for COVID-19 over the past couple weeks. At least eight members of the organization have been placed on the COVID-19 list over the past two weeks. That list includes players like Jimmy Graham, Robert Quinn and Damien Williams, and coaches such as Nagy and wide receivers coach Mike Furrey.
The outbreak is still active. The team revealed a member of the organization tested positive Thursday. Tabor declined to reveal the identity of the person who tested positive.
The Bears will take on the 49ers on Sunday and will play the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 9 before having a bye in Week 10.
