Maths teacher, 31, accused of having sex with 13-year-old student

A maths teacher has been extradited over allegations she had sex with a 13-year-old student.

The teacher has been named as Christin Covel, 31, who was recently fired from her job and reportedly booked into Sedgwick County Jail in the city of Wichita after being extradited from the US state of Oklahoma to Kansas on Tuesday afternoon.

Covel faces accusations she had a sexual relationship with an unnamed student who was not legally able to consent. The gender of the student has not been revealed.

The 31-year-old had been working at Thomas Edison Preparatory Middle and High School before she was arrested in the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma, on January 4.

Covel had also reportedly been a teacher at Mead Middle School from 2015 to July 2020.

She was considered a fugitive at the time of her arrest.

Wichita police spokesman Trevor Macy stated the alleged child sex charges involved a minor aged 13 and took place in 2018 and 2019, adding they had only just been reported last month.

Police and the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office have declined to release further information "until and unless the woman appears in court to hear any charges against her".

The charges against her have been reported as unlawful sexual relations and aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

Further details regarding the circumstances of the alleged crimes remain unclear.
