Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has denied that Mason Greenwood has been dropped by Manchester United due to disciplinary reasons.

Greenwood has not travelled with the United squad for their opening Champions League group stage match away to Paris Saint-Germain.

The 19-year-old and team-mate Brandon Williams were also left out of United’s match day squad for the 4-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

Solskjaer said Greenwood’s absence was due to a "niggle" but the youngster was pictured training with the rest of United's first-team squad at Carrington on Monday.

The United manager brushed aside suggestions that Greenwood was being punished for a disciplinary breach, asking: "If that's the case why is Brandon here? Where are your sources? That's what I'm saying!"

On Greenwood, Solskjaer added: "I can't declare medical stuff can I? We hope it's just a niggle and we don't want to take any chances with him and hopefully at the weekend it'll be fine again."

United will also be without Harry Maguire, Edinson Cavani, Eric Bailly and Jesse Lingard for Tuesday night's Group H opening game at the Parc des Princes.

"We hope the players won't be away for too long," Solskjaer said. "Edinson needs a few more days training before the weekend, hopefully Harry, Eric and Mason as well but not sure about that."

Bruno Fernandes will captain United for the first time in Maguire's absence. "I was not expecting this," he said.

"For me it's an honour. To be captain of Manchester United is an important achievement for me, but I think everyone is the captain, everyone needs to help and be a leader in their own way."
