Marriage vote to occur before year's end

Paul Osborne, AAP Senior Political Writer

The issue of same-sex marriage will be voted on before parliament rises for the year, under a plan endorsed by the coalition joint party room on Tuesday.

If there is a compulsory plebiscite the vote will be held on November 25.

If the plebiscite bill fails to pass parliament, a postal vote will be conducted with a final date to submit ballot papers set for early November.
