Man's shock as driver on wrong side of freeway flies past

A BMW driver suspected of speeding is in a critical condition after slamming head-on into another vehicle while travelling the wrong way on Melbourne’s Citylink.

Another motorist narrowly avoided being hit just moments earlier.

Eren Batu’s dash cam captured the moment he came within centimetres of a head-on crash.

He quickly called triple-zero, telling the operator: “He just went right past me, it’s a white BMW … It almost killed me! …Yes, I understand, I’m going to tell police straight away.”

Unfortunately the call for help came too late – just seconds later, the BMW ploughed into an SUV on the outbound lanes of Citylink near Flemington Road.

Both drivers were injured by the heavy impact.

“Inexplicably at times, we see people do outrageous things on our roadways and it puts a lot of people at risk,” Victoria Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Neville Taylor said.

It’s believed the BMW driver had been travelling in the correct direction before he made a U-turn just after Brunswick Road.

Eren Batu estimates the car was travelling at 120 km/hr, and has questioned why no warning was provided by the Citylink management system.

“They’ve installed that multimillion-dollar new system on Citylink and nothing was adjusted at all, 100 kilometres an hour, all the lanes were open,” he said.

The 25-year-old BMW driver is in a critical condition due to abdominal injuries.

The driver of the SUV is in a stable condition after suffering hand, elbow and knee injuries.

Police are investigating if alcohol as well as speed was a factor.
