Man's leg cut off in horrific lawn mower accident

A man has amputated his own leg while he was operating an industrial lawn mower in the outskirts of Sydney.

The man, aged 56, was operating the lawn mower on a property in Wilberforce, near the Hawkesbury River, when he suffered the amputation.

At 4.25pm, CareFlight's Rapid Response Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance to tend to the man.

Some 20 minutes after, the helicopter arrived to find paramedics on the scene, providing initial treatment for the man.

"CareFlight’s specialist doctor and NSW Ambulance critical care paramedic performed a clinical assessment on the patient, including an ultrasound, and provided treatment for the wound," CareFlight said in a statement.

"The clinical team intubated the patient and placed him in an induced coma to stabilise his condition."

The man was then airlifted to Westmead Hospital by CareFlight, in a stable condition.
