Man's dramatic arrest after he jumped into Gold Coast river trying to get away from police

A man has been captured on the Gold Coast in a dramatic arrest after he jumped off a bridge into a river trying to escape police.

Police spotted the 29-year-old man allegedly speeding in a stolen car with false number plates at Benowa about 11am on Monday.

Officers used stingers to stop the car on Ross Street Bridge.

The driver then tried to steal another car at knifepoint and when police intervened he jumped into the Nerang River, where he was captured.

The Maudsland man is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with attempted robbery, dangerous operation of a vehicle, driving without a licence and two counts of obstructing police.

He has also been charged with rape and stealing in relation to an incident on May 5 at Ormeau Hills.
