A NSW man who died in a bushfire sheltered in a water tank in his last moments as a final desperate attempt to escape.
The man, 59, was seriously burnt when the Stockyard Flat Fire impacted a property in Yarrowitch – between Walcha and Port Macquarie – on November 7.
He was found later that day by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and was flown to Port Macquarie and then the specialist burns unit at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital.
But he died of his injuries on December 29, police confirmed late on Friday.
Seventeen people have died in NSW bushfires since November, including eight in the New Year's Eve fires.
Deaths in NSW over the holiday period
Father Patrick Salway, 29, died alongside his own father, Robert, on New Year’s Eve while defending their farm north of Cobargo.
A 70-year-old man, named as Laurie Andrew by local media – was found outside a Yatte Yattah home, and another man who is yet to be identified was found in a burnt-out car near the Princes Highway at Yatte Yattah.
A yet-to-be-identified man was found in a vehicle in Sussex Inlet and another person who is yet-to-be-identified was found outside a home at Coolagolite, east of Cobargo.
Newlywed and NSW volunteer firefighter Sam McPaul was killed on Monday – weeks after the news broke of two RFS firies, Geoffrey Keaton, 32, and Andrew O'Dwyer, 36, dying in an accident while they battled a blaze near Buxton.
The body of a 72-year-old Belowra Rural Fire Service member, Colin Burns, was found in a car on Thursday.

Four killed in bushfires in November
In November, George Nole was found in his car in Wytaliba, near Glen Innes, and Vivian Chaplain, 69, was in her Wytaliba home.
In Johns River, near Taree, 63-year-old Julie Fletcher was found while Barry Parsons, 58, was found in a shed at Willawarrin, near Kempsey.
In October, Robert Lindsey, 77, and Gwenda Hyde, 68, were found in a Coongbar home near Casino.
