Manhunt underway after suspect evades police during siege

Large parts of a Sydney suburb are blocked off as heavily armed police hunt a man wanted after a car chase.

Heavily-armed tactical police surrounded a property at Liverpool in Sydney's south-west amid reports a man was inside the home armed with a chainsaw.

Officers stormed the two-storey townhouse around 4:20pm and are now searching through neighbouring properties - just why they are so desperate to catch the man isn't yet clear.

Police say the man, described as having dark skin with long brown hair, was pulled over on Lehmann Avenue in Liverpool around 12:40pm after allegedly refusing to stop.

Following a short police pursuit, the man fled the car onto Roland Avenue and locked himself inside the townhouse.

Neighbours say the man knows the woman who resides in the townhouse, a mother-of-five who lives in the home alone.

There were tense minutes as heavily-armed officers surrounded the townhouse with weapons drawn - unsure where their target was hiding.

Stunned residents could only watch on from their windows as police tried negotiating with the man using a loudspeaker.

"A fugitive... ran through our backyard and then we've come out to my dog actually attacking the police dog and the police officer himself," neighbour Kaydee Parsons.

Police tried negotiating with the man using a loudspeaker but he wasn't listening, or planning on sticking around.

Despite dozens of officers surrounding the property, the man eluded capture after appearing to have escaped through a back window.
