Manchester City have confirmed they won’t be following the lead set by Liverpool and Tottenham by furloughing staff during the coronavirus pandemic.

Premier League champions-elect Liverpool have endured widespread condemnation after announcing they would make use of government aid set up as a result of Covid-19.

But City have assured their staff they will face no such measures after the decision was ratified by the board of directors.

A spokesperson said: “We can confirm, following a decision by the Chairman and Board last week, that Manchester City will not be utilising the UK Government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (government funded furloughing).

“We remain determined to protect our people, their jobs and our business whilst at the same time doing what we can to support our wider community at this most challenging time for everybody.”
