Grisly discovery after police try to breath test man who drove off

A man is under police guard after a woman was found stabbed to death at a Wollongong home.

The 56-year-old man was stopped by police in his vehicle on Wednesday morning for an RBT at suburban Woonona on Wednesday morning but drove away from police and hit a nearby guard rail.

He is yet to be charged.

A neighbour of the property where the woman was found told the Illawarra Mercury the area is “usually quiet” and the news of her death was “confronting”.

Wollongong police Inspector Angela Burnell on Wednesday called the woman’s death a “tragic start to the New Year”.

“Our thoughts go out to the family,” she said.

Investigations are ongoing with police appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.
