An accused thief tried to flee police by swimming across the Parramatta River.

NSW Police were called to the basement of an apartment complex at Wentworth Point in Sydney's northwest on Monday after reports someone was breaking into storage cages.

Police later stopped a car, arrested the driver and found jewellery, watches, electronic devices and other items suspected of being stolen.

But the man allegedly assaulted a constable and fled.

He was tracked by police dogs to mangroves along the Parramatta River before he jumped in the water and tried to swim to the other side.

Police had to commandeer a nearby boat to catch him.

The 24-year-old man has been charged with break, enter and steal, having goods suspected of being stolen, two counts of resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.

The Ryde man will appear in Burwood Local Court on Tuesday.
