Three people have been arrested for allegedly murdering a 27-year-old man by torturing him for hours before forcing him off a cliff.
The body of Roy Jaggers, from Las Vegas, was found in Cathedral Canyon, a former tourist attraction north of the city, on August 1, Nye County Sheriff's Captain David Boruchowitz said in a video statement.
After informing Mr Jaggers’ mum of his death, Captain Boruchowitz said she told police the last person she saw her son with was their neighbour Heather Pate, 27.
The next day, police arrested Pate and two other suspects — her current boyfriend Kevin Dent, 36, and her ex-boyfriend Brad Mehn, 37.
Captain Boruchowitz said a search of Pate’s home revealed evidence connected to Jaggers’ death.
Investigators allege Pate and Dent lured Jaggers from his home and beat him at her apartment.
"They met Mehn who led them to an area in the desert where they tortured Jaggers over multiple hours, utilising numerous different weapons," Captain Boruchowitz said.
"After they finished torturing Jaggers, they drove him to Cathedral Canyon, approximately 25 miles away, where they threw him off the cliff into the gorge where they subsequently shot at him numerous times, ultimately killing him."
The trio are being held without bail on suspicion of murder, kidnapping, battery with substantial bodily harm and conspiracy to commit murder, KSNV reports
Prosecutors are considering the death penalty for Mehn, his attorney told the Las Vegas Review-Journal (LVRJ).
A criminal complaint seen by the publication says Jaggers was tortured with a blowtorch, baton, axe and knives.
He was stripped naked before being forced to walk off the cliff, the complaint says.
Captain Boruchowitz said "detectives discovered the motive for the murder was Pate's belief that Jaggers had hurt her child”.
Man's parents struggle with his violent death
The 27-year-old’s mum Kassy Robinson and dad Jerry Jaggers told LVRJ they are struggling to wrap their heads around his horrific death.
"How can you do that to another human being?" Jerry said.
The family has created a GoFundMe to raise money for Jaggers' funeral.
"Roy was so loving and friendly to everyone he met and the world is now short one amazing angel," his mum wrote on the fundraiser.
She said he loved anime, playing his saxophone and was a black belt in karate.
