Man with terminal cancer holds yard sale to raise money for funeral
A man with terminal cancer has been holding yard sales to pay for his funeral.
Willie Davis, a retired US Navy veteran living in Pennsylvania, has stage four cancer and “will not live much longer”, according to a GoFundMe page.
David Dunkleberger and his friend, Ed Sheets, came across Mr Davis, 66, on August 4 after attending one of his yard sales.
The pair bought a couple of items and he told them to spread the word about his yard sales. He added he has cancer.
“He then said he plans to sell every weekend and hopes to not have stays in the hospital so he can sell his stuff,” Mr Dunkleberger wrote.
“After giving him a strange look, he told me he has to sell everything he owns to pay for his funeral.”
The pair left but came back the next day to find out more about the 66-year-old.
Mr Davis told them he served in the US Navy from 1970-1976 and lived alone. He also has Squamous Cell Carcinoma.
“His wish is to buried right beside his parents in the cemetery plot that he owns in Culpeper, Virginia,” Mr Dunkleberger wrote.
“After meeting and talking to someone like him, I would love to raise any money we can to help this man and allow him to relax during his final days. I would love to assure him that he will be buried with his parents.”
Mr Dunkleberger added Mr Davis’s sister is in charge of selecting funeral arrangements for when the time comes.
So far, he trio has raised more than US$40,000.
Any leftover monies will go to helping other veterans in need.
