Man spends a year with his dismembered girlfriend in freezer

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of murdering his young girlfriend and then living more than a year with her hacked up body in his small freezer.

Manuel Moreno, 42, has been arrested after cops found the dismembered body of the woman, named only as Daria O. L, 22, in the city of Alcala de Henares, just north-east of the Spanish capital city of Madrid.

Her body had been hacked into pieces to make it fit in the small freezer which measured just one metre by 60 centimetres.

Police suspect Moreno killed Daria O. L. in the rented room they shared at the time she went missing in 2017 and had been living with her body in the freezer ever since.

Daria O. L., was born in Russia and was adopted by a Spanish family, just like her two sisters, who last saw her in October 2017, before she moved in with Moreno.

Her adopted mother did not report her missing until the end of December 2017 when police now believe she had already been dead for more than two months.

Daria O. L. had reportedly fallen out with her adopted family and been in touch with them only infrequently in the last few months of her life.

Cops had visited Moreno, a Spanish national who worked at a bar in the university area of Madrid, at his rented room after she went missing.

But he convinced them they had broken up and he had not seen her since she left.

However, police later learned the relationship had turned sour, with allegations of infidelity on both sides, and began following Moreno.

Police officers later identified him as a suspect, came back to his home with a search warrant and found the body of Daria O. L. in his freezer.

Moreno, who faces charges of murdering his girlfriend and dismembering her body, has been remanded in police custody while the police investigation continues.
