Man shot trying to stop car theft in Qld

Bystanders have restrained a gunman after a man was shot during an attempted car theft in northern Queensland.

Police say a man was attempting to steal a car from outside a hotel in Walkerston, near Mackay, about 7.45pm on Saturday when he was confronted by a member of the public.

"A 34-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen and was transported to hospital with what is believed to be a serious injury," police said in a statement.

"Other members of the public managed to restrain the offender with police arriving on the scene soon after."

A 35-year-old man has been arrested and is being questioned by police.
