Man shot by police outside Melbourne KFC
A man has been shot by police after a disturbance at a KFC restaurant in Melbourne.
He was hit in the lower body and taken to hospital with a non-life-threatening injury, Victoria Police said.
They said officers responded to reports of people causing trouble at a restaurant on Lauderdale Road in Narre Warren, southeast of the city.
"Officers were confronted with an agitated man wielding an edged weapon who charged at them," police said in a statement on Monday.
"A police firearm was discharged and the man was struck to the lower body."
Belinda, a caller to radio station 3AW, said the shooting happened outside the KFC across the road from the Narre Warren police station.
"It was a bit of a shock - as I was driving past, there were a couple of police members in the car park," she said.
"There was a guy there - they were spraying him and he was still coming at them."
The caller said she heard a shot, but wasn't sure at the time if it had been fired by a member of the public or a police officer.
The armed crime squad will investigate the incident, with oversight from Professional Standards Command as per standard protocol following a police shooting.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
