Man saves wife's $100,000 scratchie from bin: 'You've won!'

A Melbourne man has won himself some brownie points with his wife after rescuing her winning $100,000 scratchie ticket from the bin.

The lucky woman, who hails from Carrum Downs, told officials from The Lott she was about to throw the winning Instant Scratch-Its ticket away when her husband stopped her.

“When I first scratched the ticket, I thought it was no good, and I was going to put it into the bin,” laughed the excited woman.

“My husband said to me, ‘Let’s just have a look again’. He did have a look and he said to me, ‘You’ve won!’ she said.

The Melburnian confessed she was “very happy” to have been proven wrong by her husband in this instance.

“We even popped to the newsagency to just double-check,” she said. “I guess I’ll have to share the prize with my husband now.”

'A sign of good things to come'

The scratchie winner revealed that she played $5 Instant Scratch-Its tickets each week, however she had never won a prize of this size.

“I’ve been getting the odd prize here and there lately, but nothing like this,” she revealed.

She also shared that the prize couldn’t have come at a better time for her family, who have been going through a difficult time.

“This prize is going to come in handy. We might get a better car and help our children out as well,” she said.

“We’ve had a bit of a difficult time lately, so hopefully this is a sign of good things to come.”

The $5 Golden Edition ticket was purchased at Carrum Downs Lotto, where the owner Simon Boctor said he was ecstatic to sell his first Instant Scratch-Its top prize win in four years.

“We’ve sold four top prizes during the past 11 years, so it’s always good to add another one to the tally,” said Mr Boctor.
