Driver hit with 33 demerit points after RBT leads to unexpected find in backseat

A man has lost his driver’s licence after being slapped with 33 demerit points during a random breath test.

The man, 38, was pulled over in Woodbine in Sydney’s southwest on Saturday about 11.40am.

“While speaking with the driver, officers noticed an 11-year-old girl unrestrained in the back of the vehicle and a three-year-old not wearing a seatbelt or in an approved baby seat,” NSW police said in a statement.

“On further inspection, police discovered another three children beneath a blanket unrestrained on the floor of the van.”

The 38-year-old was issued five traffic infringement notices for unrestrained child offences, incurring six demerits for each infringement. He received three more for a defective seatbelt offence bringing his total demerits to 33.

His demerit points were doubled as part of NSW Police’s Operation Go Slow which targeted speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt and motorcycle helmet offences from Wednesday until Monday morning.

Obtaining 20 or more demerit points in NSW incurs a five-month licence suspension.

Last week, a NSW woman accumulated 28 demerit points in one go after she was pulled over by police on Easter Monday.
