Man reacts to young skate park 'bullies' grabbing 12yo boy by the throat

Police are calling on witnesses to come forward with information on an assault at a skate park captured on a mobile phone camera on the weekend.

The video shows a man at a Goonellabah skate park, near Lismore on the NSW Far North Coast, reacting to taunting of another child by grabbing a boy by the throat, shoving another boy down a half-pipe and then hurling a scooter from the park.

Police were told that on Sunday at about 5.30pm a group of 12-year-old boys were at the skate park in Goonellabah when they started to verbally abuse and threaten another 12-year-old boy.

The youths allegedly chased the other boy up Simeoni Drive towards Ballina Street, before they returned to the skate park.

The 12-year-old boy returned to the skate park with a man, believed to be his father, where the boys have taunted him again setting the man off.

Many locals have taken to Facebook saying the man was defending the child who had been bullied by the group.

One woman said she intervened last week when she saw a boy at the same skate park “trying to bash a young boy on his bike”, leaving the child and his friends too afraid to return.

Officers from Richmond Police District are investigating. They are urging anyone with information to come forward.
