Man tragically killed in paragliding accident weeks after engagement

A passionate paraglider has died just seven weeks after becoming engaged to his childhood sweetheart.

Josh Tingey, 28, died on Saturday after crashing into Mount Maunganui in New Zealand, in conditions that hang gliding pilot Dave Shaw described to the New Zealand Herald as "perfect".

While Civil Aviation and Victim Support investigate the cause of the experienced paraglider's crash, Tingey's devastated family had to be informed whilst they were on holiday in Utah.

Tingey became engaged to his first love, Bex Wotton, less than two months ago. The couple were planning to wed in May.

The adventure sports-loving surveyor from Tauranga and his fiancée had been winning contestants on a 2016 TVNZ reality show called Our First Home, taking away $100,000 after renovating a house Tingey's parents had bought for them.

He was passionate not only about paragliding, but also played tennis, hockey, and loved motorbike riding, water skiing and snow skiing.

"Most afternoons he was always off on some sort of activity, fishing, hunting, paragliding," Tingey's employer at Latitude Surveying, Trevor Davey, told The Bay of Plenty Times.

"That was a big part of his drive. He was a young man who went out charging and doing what he loved."
