Man is killed by fish in 'freak' accident

A Northern Territory fishing trip has turned to tragedy after a fish jumped into a boat and fatally struck a man in the chest.

The 56-year-old was with family and friends in Darwin Harbour on Friday when the unlikely incident occurred, NT Police said.

He was struck in the chest by a fish that launched itself into the boat, officers confirmed.

The group immediately went to nearby Cullen Bay for help where paramedics administered CPR to the man, but he later died.

He was still breathing when paramedics got the call and the cause of death is not yet known, according to NT News.

"This appears to be a freak incident which is hugely distressing for the people in the boat and other family and friends of the man," NT Police said.

“Police ask that their privacy be respected and as such will not be providing further comment.”
