Man furious over state of Coles carrots he expected to be 'perfect'

A Coles customer has posted on Facebook about his disappointment after buying carrots he thought were labelled “perfect”.

“Won’t buy another packet of Coles ‘perfect’ carrots...” he posted along with an image of several carrots with large splits in them from the Coles ‘I’m Perfect’ range.

The range is designed to offer Coles customers the opportunity to reduce waste by purchasing some of the ‘imperfect’ fruit and veg at a discount. Produce that is perfectly edible but would usually go to landfill given that it doesn’t meet aesthetic standards.

Woolworths and Harris Farm Markets also stock similar ranges to sell their blemished fruit and vegetables.

But it seems Coles’ play on words with its I’m Perfect/Imperfect brand has confused a few customers who assumed the carrots would be perfect.

One customer posted on the Coles Facebook asking for clarification over the labelling of the range.

“Coles! Please clarify! Your I'm Perfect carrots = imperfect?” one customer wrote.

“That's right, they are still perfectly good to eat!” a Coles spokesperson responded.

A few people joined in the conversation to try and help the customer understand the labelling.

“Because imperfect fruit and vegetable is still perfect,” one user wrote.

“The Imperfect - Written "I'm Perfect" on the packaging means they're a different size to what they consider ideal/marketable,” another person explained.

Coles ‘I’m Perfect’ label criticised

A few customers didn’t appreciate the play on words and suggested it was the labelling that was imperfect.

“Oh VERY misleading if not downright deceptive!” one person commented.

“It was the misleading name that I felt was false rather than funny,” a customer said.

A Coles spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia the labelling of the range was inspired by the fruit and veggies packaged.

“Since launching last year, our great tasting I’m Perfect range of Australian-grown fruits and vegetables has been overwhelmingly popular with customers who want to reduce food waste and support Aussie farmers.

“I’m Perfect is a fun play on words, because while the produce may have imperfections like shape, size or small cosmetic blemishes, it’s still fresh and bursting with flavour.”
