A court case is progressing against a Malaysian man accused of smuggling 3.5kg of heroin into Melbourne on a flight from Kuala Lumpur.

Fariq Aldakhir Aqbal Omar appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday, aided by a Malaysian interpreter, and did not apply for bail.

He has been charged by the Australian Federal Police with importing and possessing a commercial quantity of heroin.

Aqbal Omar was arrested at Tullamarine Airport on May 13 after allegedly being caught with 10 packets of the drug wrapped in masking tape.

A half-day committal hearing is scheduled for September 25, during which four witnesses are due to be cross-examined.
