Man and his dog's miraculous escape after van catches alight


A police officer has miraculously saved an elderly man and his dog after their van became engulfed in flames in Central Queensland.

Video of the harrowing scene shows a truck crash push a vehicle into a roadside bushfire north of Rockhampton, leading to an explosion.

“Get out of the car,” a police officer yells.

The fire threatens to engulf the van.

The 73-year-old man and his poodle were trapped inside the van.

The two police officers realised the only way to get the out was to unhook a trailer at the back of the van.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services’ Greg Watts said the van was in the path of the fire so “the fire quickly overtook it”.

Luckily, the man and his dog were freed.

The crash caused massive delays on the Bruce Highway, which was down to one lane for more than an hour.

The caravan driver was travelling from Logan to Mackay to deliver two motorbikes.

All three vehicles were destroyed.
