Man 'distracted by mobile phone' walks straight into canal

Footage shows the awkward moment a man was apparently so engrossed by his mobile phone he mistook a bunch of leaves for a footpath and fell right into a canal.

CCTV footage from a pub in Nottingham UK recorded the pedestrian plummeting into the water while too distracted to notice the canal coming up ahead.

Looking down at his phone while walking, the man could be seen first veering left, but instead of continuing along the footpath he stepped straight into the water.

Luckily two people nearby rushed to the rescue and pulled the pedestrian out.

The Navigation Inn yesterday shared the footage, which was recorded last month, as a warning for other punters to take care while walking close to the canal.

“Be careful looks can be deceiving the waters not disappeared!!!!!” the pub warned in the video caption.

“The post was put on here to make people aware of the danger as this guy is lucky!” the message continued.

“He wasn’t hurt and was more concerned about losing his phone he walked off back down the canal.”

The Navigation Inn landlady Annmarie Gardener said falling into the nearby canal wasn’t a common problem as most locals knew it was there.

“He thought because the leaves were on it the canal disappeared and became a path,” Ms Gardener told The Metro.

“He was on his phone. We do put warnings out in the pub and tell people to be careful. I think we have had one other person who slipped on the edge but he came back out,” she added.
