Man dies in Victoria Police custody

A man is dead after being pepper sprayed and arrested by Victoria Police.

Officers were called to reports of an assault at Wantirna on Tuesday afternoon and say they were confronted by an aggressive man.

They used pepper spray to arrest the 41-year-old Ferntree Gully man and took him to Boronia Police Station but his condition deteriorated and an ambulance was called.

The man died in hospital, police advised shortly before 11pm on Tuesday.

As per protocol, the homicide squad is investigating with oversight from the professional standards command.
