Man dies in horrific portaloo fire at sports stadium

A man has died after the portable toilet he was using at a sports stadium caught on fire.

The middle-aged man was using a portaloo on Sunday at the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland in the US, news outlet WBALTV reports.

A security guard noticed the fire and called the fire department, but the man, who ran out of the toilet engulfed in flames, was so badly burnt that authorities are still working to identify him.

The fire spread to two adjacent toilets but no-one else was seriously injured.

“From what we were told, the security guard saw him running from the porta potty; his body was physically on fire,” Baltimore Fire Department spokesperson Blair Adams said.

“Immediately, he collapsed on the floor.

“He was dead upon arrival [at the scene].”

What caused the fire to break out is still under investigation by the Baltimore Fire Department but it is not being treated as a criminal investigation, Metro UK reports.

There was no game at the stadium at the time of death so it is not known why the man was using the portaloo at the time, Ms Adams said.

“We’re unclear what he was doing inside of the porta potty at this time, if he was walking by or whatever the case, but that will be part of the investigation,” Ms Adams said.
