Queensland Police are treating the death of a man on Palm Island off Townsville as suspicious after he was found with a serious head injury.

Emergency services were called to a Creek Road address about 9.25am on Thursday where the injured 64-year-old resident was found. He later died at the scene.

Preliminary investigations indicate the death as recent, with a crime scene declared and forensic examiners flown to the island.

"It was determined that it wasn't a death from natural causes," Detective Acting Inspector Dean Cavanagh said.

"The next step of the investigation is that scene will be thoroughly investigated and processed. And we'll be looking for any evidence whatsoever that will determine what led to the death and what occurred during the death."

Police are asking for Palm Island residents to come forward with any information that may assist their investigations.
