A man has died south-west of Sydney after falling 10 metres while bushwalking.

Emergency services were called to bushland in Pheasants Nest, near Bargo, about 2pm.

Police have been told the man, aged in his 60s, was bushwalking with a group in the Sugarloaf Gully when he fell about 10 metres.

Members of the group performed CPR on the man before paramedics arrived, but he died at the scene.

"Bystanders did an outstanding job performing CPR on the patient until emergency services arrived. They should be commended for their efforts," NSW Ambulance Inspector Braden Robinson said in a statement.

"Despite the best efforts of all involved he sadly died after suffering a cardiac arrest."

An operation to recover the man's body will be coordinated, and a report prepared for the Coroner.
