A young girl is alive and a man is dead after a fiery car crash on a Melbourne freeway.

The male driver lost control of the car on the Monash Freeway - just before the Heatherton Road off-ramp - in Endeavour Hills about 1.20pm on Saturday.

The vehicle smashed into a tree and burst into flames, police confirmed.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

His passenger, a young girl, suffered serious injuries.

She was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

Thirty-six people have died on Victorian roads this year, compared to 41 in the same period last year.
