Man dead after shooting on Melbourne freeway

A man is dead after a shooting on a Melbourne freeway with police still at the scene.

Emergency services found a "spun out" car blocking inbound lanes of the Eastlink freeway near Springvale Road at Donvale around 2.30am, Victoria Police said.

"The sole occupant was located deceased in the vehicle," spokeswoman Scout Rigoni said.

The man has yet to be identified.

Two dumped cars found at Mooroolbark and Bayswater are being checked to see if they are linked to the shooting, police said.

Multiple bullet holes were reported on the side of the vehicle.

The Eastlink remains closed city bound between Maroondah Highway and Springvale Road.
