Man crossing road dead after Vic hit-run

A driver is on the run after hitting and killing a man crossing a street in Melbourne's outer northeast.

The pedestrian was crossing a road in St Helena when he was struck by the vehicle shortly before 3am on Tuesday.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

Victoria Police have not said in what direction the vehicle was travelling at the time but say the driver did not stop.

The exact circumstances of the crash are under investigation and police have released a still image from CCTV in a bid to catch the driver.
