A man has been charged with stabbing another man in the upper abdomen during a fight outside a tavern on the Gold Coast.

Police say the men, aged 20 and 30, had a verbal argument outside the Lonestar Tavern on Markeri St, Mermaid Waters, about 9pm on Monday.

The younger man then allegedly stabbed the older man before fleeing in a car.

The older man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, while the 20-year-old was pulled over and arrested at Worongary about 9:30pm.

He has been charged with wounding and is due to face Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
