WARNING - GRAPHIC CONTENT: A 55-year-old man has been charged with raping a girl repeatedly over a period of five years, resulting in the birth of a baby she allegedly killed in 1995 when she was 14.
Detectives from the Cold Case Homicide Squad travelled to Queensland on Sunday, as a result of investigations that followed the alleged mother of the baby, who is now 38, being charged with wilful murder last month.
The woman was arrested in Victoria on September 10 in relation to the death of her baby in Kambalda, a small mining town in Western Australia’s central south, 24 years ago on July 12, 1995.
WA Police said it would be alleged the man, who was known to the victim at the time, sexually assaulted the then 13-year-old girl, resulting in the baby being conceived.
“It will be further alleged the man engaged in unlawful sexual conduct with the victim over a number of years, when the victim was aged between 11 years old and 16 years old,” a police statement read.
The man has been extradited from Queensland and is due to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with two counts of sexual penetration of a child under 13 and sexual penetration of a child over 13 and under 16.
He will also face two counts of sexual penetration of a child over 16 under their authority, and having a sexual relationship with a child under the age of 16.
The baby police allege was fathered by the man was found dead inside a caravan park toilet cubicle, and discovered just hours after it was believed to have been born.
According to WA Today, a cleaner working at the Kambalda Caravan Park at the time discovered the dead baby face-down in a toilet.
Owner of the caravan park, Paul McGeever, told the Kalgoorlie Miner at the time the child was found with only his back showing and the bathroom was covered in blood.
The infant had been suffocated to death and wrapped in toilet paper before being placed in the toilet, a post-mortem exam showed.
Unsuccessful searches for the mother saw the case abandoned due to a lack of leads.
