A man in an allegedly stolen car was busted for possessing firearms and drugs after he fell asleep in the vehicle in the middle of a highway in regional NSW.

The 24-year-old man was found asleep in the early hours of Tuesday after police were called to the Mitchell Highway some eight kilometres west of Trangie near Dubbo.

When officers arrived they realised the car stopped in the middle of the highway was allegedly stolen from Queensland in 2018.

The driver was arrested with a search of the vehicle uncovering a sawn-off shotgun, ammunition, a small amount of cannabis and industrial tools also believed to have been stolen.

The man is facing a string of charges and was refused bail to appear in Dubbo Local Court.
