A NSW man has been charged with the murder of a Wollongong career criminal gunned down outside his home on Valentine's Day.

Nathan Costello, 33, was shot on the nature strip outside his Unanderra home in the early hours of February 14 in what police, at the time, believed was a targeted attack.

Police arrested a 33-year-old man after pulling over his car in a Wollongong suburb on Thursday afternoon.

Shortly after raiding his Koonawarra home, near Dapto, and seizing items they allege were relevant to the investigation, officers charged him with murder.

The man is in police custody and is due to face Wollongong Local Court on Friday.

Police say they expect to arrest more people over the shooting death of Costello.
