Man charged over fatal NSW hit-and-run
A driver who fled the scene of a fatal crash at Newcastle has been charged with dangerous driving.
The incident rook place in Wickham just after 9am on Wednesday, when the man allegedly crashed his ute into a motorised scooter ridden by local woman Jennifer Bates, who was on her way to work, the Newcastle Herald reported.
Ms Bates, 36, was rushed to hospital but died on arrival.
The crash sparked a short manhunt which ended when the 31-year-old turned himself in on Wednesday afternoon.
He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and failing to stop and assist a victim, police said.
He's been granted conditional bail and is due face the local court in February.
Ms Bates, an architect and passionate environmentalist, had just received a promotion to senior project manager of NSW Public Works department's Newcastle office.
