A man has been charged with assisting an offender (murder) and preventing the burial of a body as police search for a missing man in a case they are treating as a murder inquiry.

Cumali Turhan, 45, was last heard from when he was in The Globe, in Rainsford Road, Chelmsford, shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

Ciprian Ilie, 44, of no fixed address, appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court earlier and Essex Police is still appealing for information.

Det Ch Insp Louise Metcalfe from Essex Police said: "We’re continuing to build a picture of the circumstances leading up to Cumali being reported as missing to us, including whether others have been involved."

Police added that they had information that Mr Turhan may have been in Barista on Duke Street after The Globe.

Specialist search and forensics teams were focusing their efforts at a number of locations, including around Duke Street and "Barista specifically", the force said.

Det Ch Insp Metcalfe added: "Our investigation will continue at pace and we will endeavour to keep our communities as well-informed as we possibly can."
