A man charged in connection with a fatal collision in downtown Yellowknife on Friday has been released on bail.

The RCMP have charged Brent Taniton, 34, with impaired driving and impaired driving causing death.

He appeared before a Justice of the Peace on Monday and was later released. Under his bail conditions, Taniton, who is from Délı̨nę, N.W.T., must remain in that community, and have no contact with a number of people, including the victim's family. He is also not allowed to drive.

The incident happened Friday in the downtown core of Yellowknife. Police say a female pedestrian was hit by a truck at the intersection of Franklin and 50th Street.

Following the accident, the 62-year-old victim was rushed to hospital, where she was later declared deceased.

RCMP said they had grounds to believe Taniton was intoxicated.

Taniton's case is scheduled to be back in Yellowknife Territorial Court on Oct. 29.

In a news release Tuesday, Yellowknife RCMP urged witnesses to the accident to share information, including cellphone video or photos, dashcam footage or businesses with exterior video footage, with the RCMP at 669-1111 or Crime Stoppers at www.p3tips.com.
